I have to get one of these

I saw a guy flying around a lake in this plane a few days ago and it looked like so much fun.  He then landed it on the lake and then took off again.  Seriously one of the coolest looking hobbies i have ever seen.  After he landed again, he floated over to the launch ramp and pulled it out of the water onto a trailer and drove it home just like it was a boat.  He had to fold up the wings for transporting it home.  I have got to talk my wife into one of these.

"Geronimos" Santa Fe New Mexico

So I went to Santa Fe to view art and eat some good food.  I spent the day on Canyon Avenue viewing some art and visiting several galleries.  I had read about a great restaurant in Santa Fe called Geronimos and had wanted to try it for several months.  I figured what the heck, i  am here lets do this.  Very cool place, sat down and enjoyed the atmosphere and ordered my meal. Started with a pineapple frise salad with a killer pumpkin/olive oil vinaigrette with  tempora pear on top.  Very nice.  Then I order the elk.  Marinaded 3 days in an asian sauce(not racist. that was his words not mine) and beer.  Very tender and paired with some nice wild mushrooms and snow peas.  Tasted with some 2006 "The Boy" K vintners, Walla Walla.  I have to say, top 10 meals of all time.  Funny happening: I paid the bill with my credit card and the waiter walked back and said, "Crystal Lewis?".
 "Why, yes I exclaimed".
He continued to say how he is a big Crystal fan( I said me too), then continued on to say he loved the song I wrote 'Only Fools".  Seriously, what a small world.

Bags bobbled; but brought home the Blue!

There are days that being a dad is hard.  Today was easy.  I watched as Izzi prepared for her big day at the barn.  They had a costume horse and rider dress up day and riding competition.   She won both events.  Then she and Ripley bobbed for apples; very cute.  As the riding portion began,  she was the first rider out and did great.  I watched and couldn't believe how fast she was going and jumping on this horse.  I mean, when did she have a chance to learn how to do this I thought to myself.  Anyway after 30 minutes or so it was announced that she came in first place and received the coveted blue ribbon.  I was so proud of her, not because she won or because she looked super cool in her costume but because she didn't let fear or nervousness get the best of her.  She stepped up and got'r done.

Biggest one week decline in stock market history.

So things are getting tough.  Real tough.  The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index .VIX, Wall Street's fear gauge, hit record highs again on Friday, reflecting unprecedented investor anxiety. The VIX surged 20.4 percent to a record intraday high at 76.94. By the close, it had given up some gains, but was still up 9.4 percent at 69.95.  This basically tells us traders are scared.  Everyone feels that the selling is way overdone but there are no buyers even with these incredible prices.  No one wants to buy, at least not this week.  Everyone wants to jump in but are to scared.  You simply get your head taken off if you buy and then the next day we are down another 500 points.  I like something i heard today, any day that we are not down 500 is the new up day.  Next week will be very telling.  In the words of a great man, Walt Disney "Hold on to your hats and glasses...this is the wildest ride in the wilderness.

just passing time

I had a little time on my hands tonight and needed something to help the moment. You see I always dreamed of being a great architect, a Frank Lloyd Wright meets John Lautner or Albert Frey but well life dealt me another hand.  Don't get me wrong, i am very happy with what i have but every once in a while i still dream of building something.

Ask Fog is back...

Have you ever wondered who is a better actor Ice Cube or Ice T. What about who is the far superior author, J.D. Salinger or F. Scott Fitzgerald. What about cars, what is the best car to drive thru Glacier in the summer. What about if you are planning a trip to Palm Springs and you are wondering where to stay, who do you call... Back by popular demand AskFog mach 2... Here is your chance to stump some friends, finally get the rest you need at night tossing and turning over who could win in a street fight, Zack or Cody. You will have fun bringing closure to some of the toughest questions, while gaining thought provoking responses. For example look at one of last years questions. Scott Trentel from Little Tom, Kansas wrote, " Say Fog, what the heck is the difference between Catsup and Ketchup." Fog, "do you want the long version or the short'... whats that... ok here is the long version".

Ketchup was one of the earliest names given to this condiment, so spelled in Charles Lockyer’s book of 1711, An Account of the Trade in India: “Soy comes in Tubbs from Jappan, and the best Ketchup from Tonquin; yet good of both sorts are made and sold very cheap in China”. Nobody seems quite sure where it comes from, and I won’t bore you with a long disquisition concerning the scholarly debate on the matter, which is reflected in the varied origins given in major dictionaries. It’s likely to be from a Chinese dialect, imported into English through Malay. The original was a kind of fish sauce, though the modern Malay and Indonesian version, with the closely related name kecap, is a sweet soy sauce.
Like their Eastern forerunners, Western ketchups were dipping sauces. I’m told the first ketchup recipe appeared in Elizabeth Smith’s book The Compleat Housewife of 1727 and that it included anchovies, shallots, vinegar, white wine, sweet spices (cloves, ginger, mace, nutmeg), pepper and lemon peel. Not a tomato in sight, you will note — tomato ketchup was not introduced until about a century later, in the US, and caught on only slowly. It was more usual to base the condiment on mushrooms, or sometimes walnuts.
The confusion about names started even before Charles Lockyer wrote about it, since there is an entry dated 1690 in the Dictionary of the Canting Crew which gives it as catchup, which is another Anglicisation of the original Eastern term. Catchup was used much more in North America than in Britain: it was still common in the middle years of the nineteenth century, as in a story in Scribner’s Magazine in 1859: “I do not object to take a few slices of cold boiled ham ... with a little mushroom catchup, some Worcester sauce, and a pickle or so”. Indeed, catchup continued to appear in American works for some decades and is still to be found on occasion.
There were lots of other spellings, too, of which catsup is the best known, a modification of catchup. You can blame Jonathan Swift for it if you like, since he used it first in 1730: “And, for our home-bred British cheer, Botargo, catsup, and caveer”. [Caveer is caviar; botargo is a fish-based relish made of the roe of the mullet or tunny.] That form was also once common in the US but is much less so these days, at least on bottle labels: all the big US manufacturers now call their product ketchup.

So you see Scott, yes i could have given you the short version and told you they were both the same, but then you would have wondered why in Jersey didn't they just keep catsup, now you know.

didn't like the way i was driving?

So this guy in a truck decides he didn't like the way i was driving and calls the trooper to give me a ticket. So i ask the trooper when he pulled me over, "is this a real ticket or a citizen ticket". The officer says oh its real all right. I said, "well you didn't see what happened are you just going to take the man in the trucks word on what happened. "Yes" the officer exclaimed, "he requested that i give you a ticket". Ok, so i am trying to do the right thing here, but know this little jerk in the white truck is getting on my nerves.

Thanks for the hook up

Hey I wanted to give props to my boy for the sweet logo. I basically asked him to do what ever he wants and he came up with this. Its funny because it is so very me. I like the architectural qualities think Neutra of it and the simple and bold use of contrast, think Franz Kline. Killer Jorb Solo.

Guns, girls and the gamer

Today we had gun lessons with Lance from the sheriffs office in Lake County. The girls did great and of course solo was spot on. By far the best in the Ray lot. Going down tomorrow to get my certificate to carry a concealed weapon. I hope some of the past doesn't come up on that back ground check. Anyway don't even think about messing with Hosanna Ranch.
